Out of the box

Game design creative process

As a designer, have you ever thought about a deck of cards to ideate a new and more creative concept? What if that deck was, at the same time, a board game?

Out of the Box is the perfect combination of these two components. In this section, you can find out more about the creative process behind it.

Creative process

The creative process followed these three steps:

1. Ideation

2. Graphic design

3. Prototype & Test

1. Ideation

I started thinking about a concept and sketching some game ideas. I used some paper and other card decks to recreate what I had in mind. When a draft was ready, I played it with other people to understand what worked and what needed to be redefined.

2. Graphic design

Once the game started working, I wrote down the rules and defined all the cards that the board game needed. I then designed the graphic layout of the cards, the rules and the cover of the box, using Figma.

3. Prototype & Test

I printed everything and created a realistic prototype. The game was ready to be tested by some strangers that never heard about it. Thanks to their feedback, I had the chance to fix what was not working and design the final version of the game.
